On this webpage, we provide a comprehensive breakdown of the custom coin creation process, guiding you through each step from design to production.

Choose a Size

Selecting the right coin thickness is an essential step in creating a custom coin, as it impacts the coin’s durability, weight, and overall appearance. We offer many thickness options to suit various design needs, from as small as 1.6 mm to as large as 5.0 mm. Thicker coins provide a more prominent, high-end look, while thinner options are lightweight and cost-effective. Choosing the appropriate thickness ensures your coin achieves the perfect balance of aesthetics and functionality for its intended purpose.

The first step in the coin-building process is selecting the right size for your custom coin. The size of your coin impacts its overall design, level of detail, weight, and feel. Whether you prefer a standard 2-inch coin for a classic look or a larger 3-inch for a bold statement, choosing the right size ensures your design elements are clear and well-proportioned. When choosing the size for your custom coin, we’ve provided a visual comparison using a standard U.S. quarter, which measures exactly one inch in diameter. This allows you to see how different coin sizes relate to a familiar reference, helping you select the perfect dimensions for your design.

Choose Color & Plating

When creating your custom coin, selecting a plating color is a key design choice that defines its overall look and feel. Each plating option enhances the coin’s details in a unique way, whether you prefer a sleek, polished shine or a vintage, aged appearance.

2D Die Struck

3D Casting vs. 2D Die Striking

3D Cast

3D coins offer percise detailing of an image or design, thanks to their unlimited levels of depth, allowing for smooth gradations and rounded edges between raised and recessed areas. Typically Zinc alloy is used for 3D cast coins. 3D coins are created by a percise mold that captures the fine details of the design. Molten metal is then forced into the mold and cooled, forming a highly detailed coin.

2D coins feature two distinct metal levels: raised and recessed areas, creating a clear contrast between struck and non-struck surfaces. Typically Iron, or Brass are used for 2D die cast coins. These coins are crafted using die striking, a process in which a custom-made die made into a metal alloy stamps the artwork into brass, ensuring sharp detail and a classic, polished finish.

Translucent Enamel

Imitation Dual Plating

Dual Plating features two distinct metal finishes, enhancing the coins visual appeal. This intricate process involves electroplating the base color, applying a barrier paint, laser engraving the design, performing a second electroplating, removing the barrier paint, and finally adding a protective coating. The result is a striking, high-quality coin with a distinctive two-tone metal finish, making it a standout choice for custom designs.

Epoxy coating is a protective option for custom coins, adding a thin, clear resin layer over one or both sides. This epoxy coating enhances the coin’s durability by shielding enamel and paint from wear while providing a glossy, polished finish. It not only protects the design but also adds a smooth, high-quality look to the coin’s surface.

Translucent enamel is a premium finishing option for custom coins that enhances the design with a vibrant, glass-like effect. Unlike solid enamel, translucent enamel allows light to pass through, creating a rich, layered appearance that highlights underlying metal textures or patterns.

This process involves using a metallic enamel paint creating the apperance of a lighter two-tone metal finish that mimics traditional dual plating at a more cost-effective price. This process involves adding a secondary color finish to specific areas of the coin, creating the appearance of two different metal tones without the intricate steps of true dual plating.

Printed Insert

Printed insert coins feature a custom-printed insert embedded into the coin, allowing for photorealistic images that traditional metal engraving or enamel cannot achieve. A protective coating is often applied to ensure long-lasting clarity and durability. Printed insert coins are an excellent choice for showcasing logos, detailed artwork, or personalized imagery

Enamel coins feature recessed areas filled with colored enamel, creating a vibrant, textured look with raised metal details. Conversly, direct print coins use high-quality printing technology to apply designs directly onto the coin’s surface. This allows for intricate details, gradients, and full-color images that cannot be achieved with enamel.

Coins with enamel fill feature vibrant, long-lasting colors that enhance the design with a smooth, polished finish. The enamel is carefully applied into recessed areas of the coin, creating a striking contrast against the raised metal details. Available in both soft and hard enamel, this option allows for a wide range of color customization options while adding depth and visual appeal.

Edge Options

Choosing an edge option is the final step in creating your custom coin, adding the perfect finishing touch to your design. With eight distinct edge styles to choose from, you can enhance the coin’s appearance with subtle elegance or bold texture.
